Partnerships & Collaborations

The Montshire Museum has developed strong partnerships with other institutions and organizations to develop new exhibits, engage young scientists, and increase access to science education.

The Montshire Museum of Science collaborates with a variety of organizations to enhance learning opportunities for our visitors and local communities. Strategic alliances with other museums, community organizations, researchers and educators often require start-up funding from foundation or agency sources.

Since its early years, Montshire has been a member of the Association of Science and Technology Centers, an international organization of science centers and museums that share and work to identify best practices in the museum field. More recent collaborations include:

1995

  • The Montshire becomes one of three official education centers for the Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge along the Connecticut River, partnering with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

2007

  • Montshire formalizes its relationship with the New England Wild Flower Society, becoming a regional center for courses and certification in native plant studies.

2009

  • Montshire forms partnerships with Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Vermont Center for Ecostudies to enhance and expand programming, and to offer new opportunities to explore nature.

  • Montshire begins working with NASA on a five-year project, "The Dynamic Earth: You Have to See It to Believe It!" to develop Earth Science exhibits and programs.

  • Working closely with researchers at Dartmouth Medical School and with funding from the NIH (National Institutes of Health), Montshire begins "Connecting Classrooms and Community with Health Sciences" to develop health science curriculum for middle schools in Vermont and New Hampshire.

2010

  • Montshire begins a partnership with ILEAD (Institute for Lifelong Learning at Dartmouth) to increase the number of science courses offered in the Upper Valley.

  • Montshire and Frog Hollow, of the Vermont State Craft Center, form a collaboration to involve Vermont artists in the creation of benches for the Museum’s Woodland Garden.

Dartmouth-Montshire Institute

The Dartmouth-Montshire Institute for Science Education grew out of informal collaborations between the Museum and the College that stretched back to the Museum’s beginnings. Dartmouth College and the Montshire share a strong commitment to enhance the quality of science education in Vermont and New Hampshire. In 2002, Dartmouth provost Barry Scherr and Montshire director David Goudy announced a formal agreement to create the Institute.
